18 hours lecture and 36 hours lab per term. This course will cover standardchoral literature which will be rehearsed and performed with anemphasis on basic choral techniques. MUS 181 F - Women’s Chorale (1 Unit)

This is a performing groupwhich performs traditional choral music for treble voices in styles from theBaroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods. Prerequisite: Audition.
18 hours lecture and 18 hours lab per term. Lectures and demonstrationsare combined with student performances that provide information andopportunities toward the goal of live musical performances in the SteelPan Ensemble. Lecture/demonstrations,combined with student performances, recordings and tours are used toincrease understanding and appreciation of many Jazz genres and theirrelationship to modern American Music. Ability to play suitable instrumentsis required. Previous band, jazz ensemble, or orchestra experienceand improvisational skills are desirable. 18 hours lecture and 18 hours lab per term. Lecture/demonstrationsare combined with student performances to provide opportunities forlearning and growth in the area of jazz guitar. MUS 269 F - Alternative Jazz Lab Ensemble (1 Unit)
Prerequisite: Audition.
18 hours lecture and 36 hours lab per term. The combination of lecture/demonstrations with student performances are used to increase understandingand appreciation of many musical genres including Fusion, Latin,Rock, Pop, Salsa, Indian, and Afro-Cuban music and their relationshipto modern American composition. Ability to play suitable instrumentsis required. Previous band, jazz ensemble, or orchestra experience andimprovisational skills are desirable. Develop interactive playing techniques with AbletonLive, Tactile controllers and electronically-modified acoustic instruments torealize avant-garde, techno-pop and dance music as well as improvisedpieces with multi-media content. This course is a performance orientedclass and incorporates traditional choral literature of a sacred and secularnature. There will be at least one major work performed per year oncampus and in the community. This course is open to students and to allresidents of the North Orange County Community College District. This course is designedto meet the various needs of music areas that required advanced trainingand continuing education as well as provide professional growth forpersons employed in the music business, production, recording, andperforming fields. This course will be offered in modules of advancedtopics. Unit credit may range from .5 to 3 units per module. MUS 287 F - Vocal Jazz Ensemble (1 Unit)
Prerequisite: Audition.
18 hours lecture, 36 hours lab and 18 hours arranged in rehearsals, studiorecordings, workshops, festival competitions and concerts. The studentsin this course will rehearse and perform standard and current musicfrom the Vocal Jazz genre. The vocalists will be accompanied by a smallinstrumental ensemble. There will be a secondary emphasis upon vocalimprovisation in the scat style. Student compositions and arrangementsare encouraged. Course may be taken four times for credit.
