Gianni Schicchi Opera

Directed by Susan Ali
Performed:
Saturday, February 9th, 2013 - Sunday, February 10th, 2013

About the event

Old man Buoso Donati has died. As the opera begins, all of his relatives are wailing as though in mourning. We soon learn the devastation is due to the rumor that Donati has willed everything to the church. His relatives, thinking they would benefit from his will, were looking forward to cashing in on his fortune. They call in the clever and shrewd Gianni Schicchi to help with a plan. Opera will be sung in English. He hides the body and takes the place, posing as Donati on his deathbed. The officials are called in and he, disguised as Donati, dictates a new will. Schicchi states that the church will receive very little, the relatives will receive small pieces of property, and the majority of the estate will go to his "good friend Gianni Schicchi." The relatives, shocked, say nothing for Schicchi has consistently reminded them of the heavy punishment for falsifying a will. After the lawyer leaves with the new will, Schicchi chases the relatives out of the estate--his new home!
